Understanding your Competition is the Key to Your Online Success
The first thing that I am going to show you is how to analize your competition and why we do this. As this is probably the single most important aspect of your marketing plan and should be completed before you design your web site. Skip this step at your own expense.
Type in the keyword to analize, I use google as it's the most widely used search engine and will give you a bigger picture of your market. The keyword that I am going to use is " Internet marketing plan" you will notice here that I do not use single words as they are two competitive and you should look at using three to five word key phrases.
I have entered the keyword internet just to give you an example of how competitive a single keyword can be and to give you an understanding of why I use three to five word keyword phrases..
You will notice above that if you wished to optimize for this keyword you would be trying to compete with 904,000,000, yes you are reading it right ,this is not a good way to start your internet marketing plan.
Now lets look at the right way...
Lets go to google and type in internet marketing plan so that we can analize the web sites competing for this keyword phrase.
You can see that I have just eliminated 98% of my competition by choosing to use a three word key phrase instead of the single word internet. And most importantly I am still in my area of interest.
To analize this even further I now look to see what web sites are in the top 10 postions for this keyword phrase. And what I have discovered is that the no:1 ranked site for internet marketing plan is a 1st level domain, but the next three postions are occupied by sites that have sub level pages listed.
Example:
No:1 ranked site= http://www.millenium-ltd.com (1st level Domain)
No:2 ranked site=http://www.millenium-ltd.com/internetmarketing.htm (Sub Level)
Search engines prefer to list 1st level domains so there is a good chance with some page optimization I could move my site into search result no: 2 for this keyword in google.
